Good afternoon.
For the past nine years, eight years as attorney general, and one as governor, I have tried to uphold a vision of progressive politics that would rebuild New York and create opportunity for all. We sought to bring real change to New York and that will continue.
Today I want to briefly address a private matter. I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family and violates my, or any, sense of right and wrong. I apologize first and most importantly to my family. I apologize to the public, whom I promised better.
I do not believe that politics in the long run is about individuals. It is about ideas, the public good, and doing what is best for the state of New York. But I have disappointed and failed to live up to the standard I expected of myself. I must now dedicate some time to regain the trust of my family.
I will not be taking questions. Thank you very much. I will report back to you in short order. Thank you very much.

By Brandon, March 12, 2008 at 09:16I like this story!
I think it's awesome when a moral, righteous and indignant politician gets caught with his pants down. I especially love it when it happens to pompous religious politicians, but in a draught - any politician will do.
Politicians are assholes. They boss us around and tell us what to do. They take all our money and spend it on their personal agendas then bask in the glory of every success that the citizenry has while they're in power and shuffle the blame for everything that goes wrong. They play politics under the canopy of corporate sponsorship and billions of dollars of hard-earned money syphoned from the people through egregious taxation and then impose moral strictitudes on the population that only Christ could satisfy. They ruin everything they touch and impose on our freedom with every breath they take.
Whenever a politican goes down in flames it is a GOOD DAY.
Spitzer, like every other politician before you, say goodbye to the lime light and all that power you stole. See you in hell jackass.

By ashley, March 11, 2008 at 15:56If I was in the public eye somehow in some capacity and I wanted to sleep with a hooker (there is a sentence I never thought I would say)... What sense does it make to go to some huge company to pick up an escort. I would go somewhere low-profile...
I'm just saying...
I don't know why I am giving him tips though....

By Mike Small, March 11, 2008 at 14:57While I don't agree with his actions, I do feel sorry for him. I can't imagine how hard it would be to tell your wife you were cheating with a prostitute, let alone the whole world.

By Robyn Stubbs, March 11, 2008 at 14:54If morality isn't enough to make you do the right thing, the fact that as a public servant, every mistake you'll ever make is bound to become public knowledge, should be. It's the life they chose, so why don't high profile people understand that EVERY TIME THEY DO SOMETHING WRONG, WE'LL FIND OUT ABOUT IT? This is the quintessential "it's-only-a-mistake-because-I-got-caught" routine.
Re: "Hookergate:" NY Governor Eliot Spitzer Given 48 Hours To Re
By ashley, March 11, 2008 at 13:39It is unfortunate to me that this isn't a surprise anymore.
High profile people seem to think that they can and will get away with a lot of things and for the most part they do. Remember OJ? I am sure that the glove didn't fit.
What also bothers me is that is PR people will have spun this into a substance abuse problem, or a sexual addiction. He will be ultimately forced to resign, because who is going to respect him now. He'll spent 6 weeks at a beautiful 'rehab' so that he can work on himself and in 5 years he will once again be considered a 'family man'...
It bothers me. It doesn't so much bother me that he cheated on his wife, but the "I need help" routine makes my back go up.... Can't you tell?
